If you have not described your target audience, who you will consider to market the plan for and if you have no one or anyone at random to market for, your business is sure to fall.

Although this article makes perfect sense when you think about it – there are things that happen in life which cause me at least to think counter to this conventional wisdom – find a target market and focus on presenting yourself to that market, but what happens if you find that you see your products and services satisfying the needs of so many people and businesses that you might not ever thought of as part of your target market? Would you not reconsider that the concept of such a target group of individuals or businesses would be much too limiting and that the including of a much wider audience for whom you present your products and services to would make much better use of your time than a narrower group – As many times as I have read about, heard about and thought about what is being said in this article, I cannot seem to grasp just how this thinking would apply to me – and in fact the more that I read and hear about it – the more I think and believe that the complete opposite is true – How could I possibly imagine who or what type of person would need or want any one of the over 117,000 images in my galleries as a print or canvas – and how would I ever know that the person who I think might need an ad for their hight fashion clothing store on Fifth Avenue might eventually also need my services as a wedding photographer – and would not the limiting of my presentation to any one of these people remove me from their consideration for each one of these assignments? The only thing that I would like to eventually do for the world is to expand everyone’s mind and concepts so that they are more open to possibilities that they might not have otherwise considered on their own – in doing this I give them the chance to receive both better products as well as better results from a service that they might not otherwise consider for their needs –

  2. In response to you Walter, I have to say that I agree completely with the article. Whilst the drift of your argument seems logical, it is important to place the article in the context of the marketing activities which the average business owner has to do. Understanding that resources are limited it would be highly ineffective to be or indeed attempt to be ” all things to all men”.

    The true restriction is not a restriction of your market , rather it is a restriction of your marketing dollars, time and effort. This is the crux of the matter. By staying focused on a narrower market you can radically increase your results, by having the ability to reduce the restrictions of trying to market to a larger crowd.

  5. Yes you have to keep advertising if you want to get referrals and sell products. Some find it easy to recruit from their marketing and others never make any sales. Still if you keep trying different methods and strategies then you can check which campaigns do better than the rest and change the advertising to get better results
