Little Known Strategies For Increasing Opt-In Rate

One of our great clients, asked a valuable question about embedding YouTube videos on your landing page today. Since the question was asked in our private client only Facebook group, I’m posting the answer here on our blog as well.

Ok, so we all know the important of the little details on a landing page (aka squeeze page). Very simple changes can greatly increase your rate of opt in and when you add all these factors together they can really make or break a squeeze page. Over the years of designing these pages I’ve found that a page with poor opt-in performance can often be turned into a guaranteed opt-in machine with a few alterations. Today I’ll talk briefly about a couple such tweaks that have definitely increased our opt-in rates.

Probably the biggest “must have” for any squeeze page is a solid 30 second to 1 minute video with a clear CTA (call to action). These types of videos will up your opt-in rates tremendously, but only if the person actually watches the video. One way to make sure they watch the video (or at least some of it) if to make the video autoplay when they land on the page. This used to be a big hassle back in the day, but for a while now YouTube has made it really easy. The weird thing is that not many of your average YouTube users know that you can make the video play automatically. That’s because its not a feature you can select when copying the embed code.

All you have to do is add this little snippet after the video URL in the HTML code “&autoplay=1”. This will allow the video to stream automatically when someone lands on the page. It’s that simple.

Another thing I suggest you do is to prevent your YouTube video from displaying related videos when the video is over. Often times, if you don’t have a very established YouTube channel you will see a lot of totally random videos from other users in the suggested videos section. YouTube offers a check box option to remove the related videos when your video is done playing. Definitely make sure that box is unchecked before you copy the embed code. The last thing you want is to have a person who is ready to opt-in after watching your video, and then see a suggested video that offends them or changes their mind. This will prevent people from flip flopping based on a trivial related video. See the screen shot below…

So in summary, you want to make sure that whenever you are embedding a YouTube video on your landing page that you remove related videos and make the video autoplay. Here is an example of what the HTML code will look like when you want the video to autoplay and not show related videos…

I’ve bolded and underlined the little bit of code that prevents the related videos and makes the video autoplay so you can see what it actually looks like in HTML.
